Michael W. Grochowski
Regional Commissioner

Michael W. Grochowski began his Federal career in 1974 with the Veterans Administration after having served in the Armed Forces, including a tour in the Republic of Vietnam.  Mr. Grochowski has held executive positions with the Health Care Finance Administration and the Social Security Administration and was appointed to the Federal Senior Executive Service in 1988.

In 1996, Mr. Grochowski was appointed as the Regional Commissioner for the Kansas City Region and was responsible for all operations in the States of Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa.

In 2011, Mr. Grochowski was appointed as the Regional Commissioner for the Atlanta Region.  As Regional Commissioner, he is responsible for administering the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income Programs in the following 8 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.  The Atlanta Region consists of over 250 facilities; approximately 12,000 employees; serves a population of over 67.8 million citizens; and pays monthly benefits that exceed $14 billion dollars.

Mr. Grochowski holds a B.A. degree from Loyola University of Maryland and a M.A. degree from Notre Dame College in Baltimore.  He is also a graduate of Harvard University’s “Government Leadership” and “Strategic Public Sector Negotiating” Programs.

Throughout his Federal career, Mr. Grochowski has received numerous performance and honorary awards, including the Health and Human Services Superior Service Award, Senior Executive Service Performance Awards, the 2000 Public Administrator of the Year given by the American Society of Public Administrators Kansas City Chapter, and the 2004 Presidential Meritorious Rank Award, the second highest award bestowed by the President for Senior Executives.  In April 2012, Mr. Grochowski received the very prestigious 2011 Presidential Distinguished Rank Award, the highest award bestowed by the President for his exceptional achievement in the career Senior Executive Service.  

Mr. Grochowski is married, has a son, stepson, two stepdaughters, and eight grandchildren.  He currently resides in Georgia.
