Welcome!

I just applied for Social Security retirement benefits online. You can too!
You may use this electronic application to file for Social Security retirement, disabilty or spouse's benefits, or any combination of those benefits for yourself. We will let you know which benefits you are entitled to after we receive the application.

For most people, applying for Social Security benefits is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The following pages will guide you through the online application process, tell you what information you’ll need to answer the questions on the application and describe the documents you may need to present after you apply. Please read these pages carefully to make sure you are ready to fill out the online application.

Maybe you already know a lot about the Social Security program and will be ready to go right to the application after reading these introductory pages. Or maybe you feel you need to learn a little bit more about Social Security first. We’ll tell you where on the Internet you can get the additional information you need. We have also provided a “practice” application, so you can run through the questions before you actually apply.

And, if you still need more information, you can call us toll-free at 1-800-772-1213 from 7 AM until 7 PM Monday through Friday. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you may call our toll-free TTY number, 1-800-325-0778. We’ll be glad to discuss your concerns with you and answer your questions.

Form approved: OMB No. 0960-0618
Expires 06/30/2008

Your right to representation

You can choose to have an authorized representative, such as an attorney, help you when you do business with Social Security, but you do not need to have one. We will work with your representative just as we would work with you. For more information about your right to representation, view our publication, Your Right to Representation.

Authorized representatives

If you are acting as someone's authorized representative to do business with Social Security, you must first submit form SSA-1696-U4 (Appointment of Representative). To get a copy and an explanation of the representative process, visit our web page, Representing Claimants.
