Professor Theron Schlabach of Goshen College authored two important
early works relating to the history of social insurance. His masterful
biography of Edwin Witte, "Edwin Witte" Cautious Reformer"
is both the definitive work on Witte and his career and an instructive
guide to many of the issues which arose in the early years of the
Social Security system. And his unpublished study "Rationality
and Welfare: Public Discussion of Poverty and Social Insurance in
the United States 1875-1935" is one of the best sources for
developments in the pre-Social Security era.
As part of his research for these two projects, Professor Schlabach
accumulated a large cache of papers, microfilm, news clippings, etc.
related to his two research topics. In late 2001 he generously donated
these papers to the SSA History Archives. The Schlabach Papers thus
take their place among the unique research collections available in
the SSA History Archives. |
