Social Security Legislative Bulletin

Number: 111-7
Date: February 2, 2009

Senate Amends and Passes H.R. 2, the
“Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009”

On January 29, 2009, the Senate passed, by a vote of 66 - 32, H.R. 2, the “Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009,” after substituting the language of the Senate version of the bill (S. 275 – see Legislative Bulletin 111-3).

This bill contains a provision which would require verification of an individual's declaration of citizenship or nationality identical to that in H.R. 2 as passed by the House on January 14, 2009 (see Legislative Bulletin 111-1), except that this verification requirement would be effective on January 1, 2010 (rather than October 1, 2009). There are no other provisions of interest to SSA.

If the House agrees with the Senate amendment, the bill will be then be sent to the President. If the House does not agree with the Senate amendment, there will be a conference to resolve differences.
