THE PRESIDENT SIGNS
EMERGENCY SUPPLEMENTAL BILL
INCLUDING EXTENSION OF BENEFITS FOR NONCITIZENS

 

On June 12, 1997, the President signed into law an emergency supplemental appropriations bill (H.R. 1871) for recovery from natural disasters, overseas peacekeeping efforts and other purposes, including an SSA-related provision that:

  • Provides a one-month extension of SSI eligibility for noncitizens who were receiving benefits on August 22, 1996, and who would not continue to be eligible under the noncitizen restrictions in the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, by changing the date that noncitizen redeterminations have to be completed from August 22, 1997 to September 30, 1997.
