About Our Organization
A Message From the Inspector General
The men and women of the Office of the Inspector General are a talented and
dedicated group of professionals. Proud of their work and believing deeply in
their mission, they bring diverse skills but the same unyielding commitment
to the table every day. I am honored to have the opportunity to lead them in
our effort to maintain the integrity of Social Security's vital programs.

Inspector General
Our Mission
The mission of the Social Security Administration's (SSA) Office of the Inspector
General is to improve SSA programs and operations and protect them against fraud,
waste, and abuse by conducting independent and objective audits, investigations,
and evaulations.
Our Vision and Values
We are agents of positive change striving for continuous improvement in SSA
programs and operations and management by proactively seeking new ways to prevent
and deter fraud, waste and abuse.
We are committed to integrity and to achieving excellence by supporting an
environment that encourages employee development and retention, and fosters
diversity and innovation, while providing a valuable public service.
Office of Audit (OA)
OA conducts and supervises comprehensive financial and performance audits of
SSA's programs and operations and makes recommendations to ensure that program
objectives are achieved effectively and efficiently. OA also conducts short-term
management and program evaluations, and other projects on issues of concern
to SSA, the Congress, and the general public.
Office of the Counsel to the Inspector General (OCIG)
OCIG provides independent legal advice and counsel to the Inspector General
on a wide range of issues, including statutes, regulations, legislation, and
policy directives. OCIG also administers the Civil Monetary Penalty program,
investigative.
Office of External Relations (OER)
OER manages OIG's external and public affairs programs and serves as the primary
contact with Congress, the media, and the public. OER prepares OIG publications
and presentations, and coordinates reporting requirements and interagency activities.
Office of Investigations (OI)
OI conducts and coordinates investigative activity related to fraud, waste,
abuse, and mismanagement in SSA programs and operations. This office serves
as OIG's liaison to the Department of Justice on all matters relating to the
investigation of SSA programs and personnel. OI also conducts joint investigations
with other Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies.
Office of Technology and Resource Management (OTRM)
OTRM provides administrative and management support to the Inspector General
and OIG components. OTRM formulates and executes the OIG budget and is responsible
for strategic planning and performance reporting and facility and property management.
OTRM develops and maintains OIG's administrative and management policy and procedures,
and performs all human resource support activities for OIG. OTRM also plans,
designs, develops, tests, implements, and maintains hardware, software, and
telecommunications networks to support OIG's mission.
