All Social Security disabled beneficiaries in current payment status, 1970-2000

This line chart shows the number of all disabled beneficiaries, disabled workers, disabled widow(er)s, and disabled adult children from 1970 to 2000.

The total number of beneficiaries rose steadily from 1,812,786 in1970 to 3.1 million in 1976, dipped slightly in the early 1980s, then began to climb again, reaching 5,972,468 in 2000.

The number of disabled workers grew steadily from 1,492,948 in 1970 to 2,858,680 in 1980, declined slightly until 1983, started to increase again in 1984, and began to rise more rapidly beginning in 1990, reaching 5,042,333 in 2000. The increased growth in the 1980s and 1990s was the result of legislative changes.

The number of disabled widow(er)s grew from 49,281 in 1970 to 201,446 in 2000.

The number of disabled adult children grew from 270,557 to 728,689.
