Chart 3.
Disabled beneficiaries aged 18-64 in current payment status as a percentage of state population, December 2001

This map of the United States is shaded in four different colors to show the number of disabled beneficiaries in the 50 states and the District of Columbia as a percentage of the state's resident population.

In 25 states, disabled beneficiaries make up 3 to 3.9 percent of the population, which is in line with the 3.4 percent average for the entire United States. As previously mentioned in the main text, disabled beneficiaries represented less than 3 percent of the state population in 14 states. The remaining 12 states had disabled beneficiary populations of over 4 percent. Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Tennessee had disabled beneficiaries accounting for 4 to 4.9 percent of their populations. The six states with the highest rates of disabled beneficiaries--5 percent or more--were already mentioned in the main text.
