Did You Get Married This Year and Want to Change Your Name? Start with Social Security.
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue... and one more thing for the newlyweds to-do. If your marriage came with a new last name, make sure your Social Security record gets the update, too.
To make the process a breeze, we recommend updating your records with us before taking a trip to your local motor vehicle administration. This helps us keep your records accurate and avoids any potential hiccups with your employment, taxes, or benefits.
You two love birds are not alone; we’ll walk you through what you need to know and how to get started.
How to Change Your Name on Your Social Security Card
It is best to wait for your state to update its record before you start the process with us. In most cases, the state takes about 30 days to process the name change. Once processed, follow these steps to update your Social Security card to legally change your name:
- Start Online: The fastest way to apply for a Social Security Card is online. Visit the Personal Social Security record webpage to start your Social Security card application online. In many cases, you can complete your request online, without ever stepping foot into a local Social Security office. Get started today by logging in to your personal my Social Security account.
- In-Person Help: If you need to visit us in person, you can speed up the process by starting your application online. Then, schedule an appointment with your local Social Security office or card center to submit your documents. Use our online office locator to find an office near you and make an appointment. Appointments are not required but can significantly reduce your wait time.
- Paper Application: If you prefer not to use our online services, you can complete a paper application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5) and schedule an appointment. Make sure to bring the required documents with you to your local Social Security office.
What Documents will you Need?
To get a Social Security card with your new name, you’ll need to show proof of:
- Your identity. A U.S. driver's license (preferred), state-issued non-driver identification card, or U.S. passport will satisfy this requirement.
- Your new legal name and the name change event. In this case, a marriage certificate is ideal.
- U.S. citizenship or lawful noncitizen status, if needed. Your Permanent Resident Card (I-551), Green Card, Employment Authorization Document (I-766), or a work permit will suffice.
You must present original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies.
For a full list of documents and requirements, visit our Learn What Documents You Need page and select “Corrected” under the “Type of Card” heading.
