Annual Trustees Reports provide estimates describing the actuarial status of Social Security's Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) and Disability Insurance (DI) Trust Funds under current law. In making these estimates, the Trustees make key demographic assumptions and economic assumptions. The intermediate set of assumptions reflects the Trustees’ best estimates of future experience.

The following tables provide historical and projected populations of the Social Security area by single year of age, sex, marital status, and year for the period December 1940 through December 2090. The Social Security area is comprised of: (1) residents of the 50 States and the District of Columbia (adjusted for net census undercount); (2) civilian residents of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands; (3) Federal civilian employees and persons in the U.S. Armed Forces abroad and their dependents; (4) non-citizens living abroad who are insured for Social Security benefits; and (5) all other U.S. citizens abroad.

(Projected values contained in these files are based on the intermediate assumptions of the 2016 Trustees Report)

In each file, the first column gives the year and the second column gives the age. The remaining columns have headings that display the sex and marital status.

Note that the beginning-of-year files and the end-of-year files contain the same data, other than that the years are offset by 1. For example, the January 1, 1941, data in the beginning-of-year file is the same as the December 31, 1940, data in the end-of-year file.
