Social Security Express

Thank you for participating in Social Security Express. We hope that this effort will be of mutual benefit to the public served by your agency and the Social Security Administration.

Please have a person with administrative rights install the SSA Express shortcut where it can be used by anyone who has access to your self-service computer (i.e. a public desktop folder location) and reload the shortcut if it is mistakenly deleted.

We recommend setting up a folder called SSA_Express on the self-service computer's C: drive. The folder should include the SSA Express icon image, a copy of the SSA Express shortcut, and a copy of the instructions (below) so the icon or shortcut can be restored if it's mistakenly deleted or modified.

How To Save A Copy Of The Social Security Express Desktop Icon

Social Security Express Logo

  1. Open Windows Explorer and go to your C: drive.
  2. On your C: drive, create a new folder called "SSA_Express."
  3. Right-click on the Social Security Express Desktop Icon (above).
  4. Select "Save Target As…" or "Save Link As…" then save the icon image (the ssa-express.ico file) to your SSA_Express folder.

How To Create A Social Security Express Shortcut

  1. Open the "SSA_Express" folder you created on your C: drive.
  2. Right-click on the white space under the icon image and select "New," "Shortcut."  You will get a "prompt" that asks "What item would you like to create a shortcut for?"
  3. Enter the Social Security Express Quick Service or Full Service URL (below) you want to use.
  4. Add the ?id=site code for your pilot site to the end of the URL.
Example: If the ABC Job Center site code is LM7, the Full Service URL (with the ABC Job Center site code) is  http://www.socialsecurity.gov/ssaexpress/intro.html?id=LM7.
Each pilot site was assigned a unique site code. If you do not know the code for your pilot site, please contact your Social Security Express regional coordinator.
  5. Click "Next." You will get a prompt that asks "What would you like to name the shortcut?" Enter "SSA Express" in the text box and click on "Finish."
Result: You now have a shortcut to Social Security Express in your SSA_Express folder. (You still need to add the icon.)
  6. Right click on your Social Security Express shortcut and select "Properties." Then select the "Web Document" tab and click on the "Change Icon" button.
  7. Click the "Browse" button and go to the folder where you saved the Social Security Express Icon.  Select the logo and click on "Open," then click on "OK."
  8. Select "Apply," to change the icon and "OK" to close the Social Security Express "Properties" window. Your shortcut to Social Security Express should now include the icon.

How to Add The Social Security Express Shortcut To Your Desktop

  1. Open Windows Explorer and go to the SSA_Express folder on your C: drive.
  2. Right click on the desktop icon shortcut in the SSA_Express folder. Select "Send to," then click on "Desktop (create shortcut)."
Result: You now have a shortcut to Social Security Express on your desktop.
You can also use these steps to restore the desktop shortcut if it is mistakenly deleted.
