How we define disability
The Social Security Act defines disability very strictly.
A person is disabled under the Act if he or she cannot work due to a severe medical condition that has lasted or is expected to last at least one year or result in death. The condition must also prevent the person from doing work he or she did in the past and from adjusting to new work. #SSDIfacts

Preventing & prosecuting fraud
At Social Security, we are dedicated to running our fraud prevention program with a high degree of accuracy. We work aggressively to prevent, detect and prosecute fraud. Together with our Office of the Inspector General, Social Security identifies and prosecutes to the full extent of the law those who commit fraud. Our zero tolerance approach has resulted in a fraud incidence rate that is a fraction of 1%. To report fraud, waste and abuse, complete our online form.

Increase in people qualifying for disability benefits
Do you or a loved one receive Social Security Disability benefits?
Did you know that Social Security pays about 8.9 million disabled workers and 2.1 million dependents? The payments are modest. For many beneficiaries, their monthly disability payment represents most of their income. Even these modest payments can make a huge difference in the lives of people who can no longer work. They allow people to meet basic needs and the needs of their families.
