Changes for Tax Year 2010
Business Services Online
- Business Services Online will begin accepting Tax Year 2010 W-2 on December 6, 2010.
- Business Services Online may experience delays in processing due to a high volume.
Please check the Business Services Online website for updated information regarding potential delays.
- As part of the registration process, sometimes Social Security is unable to verify information about you or your
employer. Social Security will provide you with a screen explaining any additional information you will need to complete
the registration. You will need to fax this information to Social Security at 570-706-7874.
Password Reminders
- If you have not changed your password in over 90 days, the next time you login to Business Services Online,
you are asked to change your password at that time.
- Forget your password? When you registered to use Business Services Online, you selected five familiar questions.
We stored your answers to these questions. Just answer these questions and you will be able to self-select a new password
and gain access to services immediately.
Avoid Getting a Busy Signal
If you need to call Social Security with a wage reporting question, December is a good time.
In January and February, we receive more phone calls then we are able to answer as quickly as we would like.
To avoid a busy signal, look for the answers to many of your questions at our website,
www.socialsecurity.gov/employer. We have a Frequently Asked Questions link located in the left column.
Social Security Number Verification Service
- Activation codes
- When you request access to the Social Security Number Verification Service, Social Security will mail an
activation code to your employer as part of the authentication process. It may take up to two weeks to receive
the code. It normally takes longer between January and March -so don't delay, consider registering today.
- Have you requested a second activation code?
- If you request a second activation code before you receive the first activation code, it will automatically
cancel the first activation code request. If you have an activation code and are not sure whether it is the first
or second activation code, we recommend that you try the activation code no more than two times. If it fails twice
do not try a third time--it is the first activation code and is no longer valid. A third failure using that
activation code will also cancel your second request and you will have to apply a third time.
Please wait until you receive the second activation code letter.
W-2/W-3
- Forms W-2 for Tax Year 2010 must be distributed to employees before February 1, 2011.
- You do not need to mail paper copies of the forms W-2/W-3 to Social Security when you file online.
By using the Forms W-2/W-3 Online to create your W-2s and W-3s, you have already provided the forms to Social Security.
W-2/W-3c
Using Forms W-2c/W-3c Online does not relieve employers of the obligation to provide corrected annual wage statements to
employees and state/local jurisdictions. Forms W-2c for any tax year must be distributed to employees as soon as possible.
Social Security Number Randomization
Social Security is changing the way Social Security Numbers are issued. This change is referred to as
SSN Randomization.
