Senate passes S. 578, the
ALS Disability Insurance Access Act of 2019

On December 2, 2020, the Senate passed S. 578, the ALS Disability Insurance Access Act of 2019, without amendment by a vote of 96-1.  The bill would amend Title II of the Social Security Act to eliminate the five-month waiting period for disability insurance benefits for individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).  The House introduced an identical bill, H.R. 1470, on February 27, 2019 and it is pending in the Committee on Ways and Means.
The provision would apply to applications for disability insurance benefits filed after the date of the enactment of the Act.
