What do I do if I need to remove earnings that are not mine from my Social Security record?

 ·

If you have earnings on your record that do not belong to you, we can help you correct your record.

You may be able to request a correction to your earnings online. Sign in to your personal my Social Security account, select “Review your full earnings record now” under the Eligibility and Earnings section, and then choose “Request a correction online.”

Note: Not everyone is eligible for online earnings corrections.

If you cannot use the online service, you will need to visit a local Social Security office and provide some additional information. We will first verify your identity and then discuss the earnings in question. We will ask you to declare under penalty of perjury that the earnings are not yours. In some cases, we will ask you to complete form SSA-7008 Request for Correction of Earnings Record and submit additional documentation. We recommend bringing copies of your filed tax returns for the year(s) in question when you visit the local office. You can schedule an appointment online by visiting https://www.ssa.gov/manage-benefits/make-an-appointment or by calling 1-800-772-1213.

Note: Changes to your Social Security earnings record may impact eligibility for, or entitlement to, certain programs and may affect benefit estimates and determinations.

Social Security does not handle identity theft issues, but we can help correct your Social Security records. If you think you have been a victim of identity theft, please contact the Federal Trade Commission or FTC. You can report a stolen Social Security number and learn about steps to protect yourself at www.identitytheft.gov/steps. If you need to speak with an FTC representative, call 1-877-438-4338 or visit Identity Theft and Your Social Security Number.
