SSA Commissioners - Louis D. Enoff

Lou Enoff was born in Greensboro, Pennsylvania. He received a bachelor's degree from West Virginia University in 1964 and shortly thereafter began his career with Social Security as a Claims Examiner in the Baltimore Payment Center.

In 1966, Mr. Enoff entered SSA's management intern program, which led to a position on the Labor Relations/Equal Opportunity Staff. In 1969 he became the coordinator for management interns in the Office of Personnel. In 1972 he joined the newly established Bureau of Supplemental Security Income as Executive Officer, and Deputy Assistant Bureau Director for Administration. In 1975, Mr. Enoff went to the Bureau of Disability Insurance as the Assistant Bureau Director for Administration and Appraisal. From 1976 to 1979 he was the Deputy Regional Commissioner in Philadelphia. In 1979 he was appointed Director, Office of Human Resources. From 1980 to 1983, Mr. Enoff served as Acting Deputy Associate Commissioner for Management, Budget and Personnel. Mr. Enoff was named Acting Deputy Commissioner for Programs and Policy in 1983, a position he occupied until 1986 when he became Deputy Commissioner for Programs.

In 1991 Mr. Enoff was appointed SSA's first Principal Deputy Commissioner with responsibility for providing leadership and direction to the Deputy Commissioners. From 1992 to 1993 Mr. Enoff served as Acting Commissioner. Mr. Enoff retired from Social Security in 1994, as General Counsel to the Principal Deputy Commissioner, after nearly thirty years of Federal service.
