** The Fiscal Year changed from July 1st-June 30th to October 1st-September 30th.

*** There was not a large increase in the number of field offices starting in 1996, as the figures seem to suggest. In 1996 SSA changed the definition of a "field office." Previously, Resident Stations were not counted as field offices. Beginning in 1996 they are included in the field office figure. There are 31 resident stations in the 2009 figure plus 8 specialized Social Security Card Centers.
