Social Security Expands Resources and Services for Alaska

Baltimore, MD—The Social Security Administration (SSA) today announced a significant expansion of resources to better meet the needs of Alaskans. This effort includes improved phone service, targeted support for remote communities, expanded virtual-service options, and new technology designed to make it easier for residents to access Social Security services.

"The Social Security Administration is ensuring Alaskans have more options to access services, whether online, by phone, or in person," said Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano. "U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan wrote to me last year outlining Alaska’s service needs, and we have been acting on his recommendations. Working together, we have expanded resources across the state to make it easier and more convenient for Alaskans to do business with Social Security."

SSA has made significant improvements to service delivery in Alaska. In fiscal year 2026, the agency's new phone technology nearly doubled the answer rate in Alaska field offices, while callers to the National 800 Number experienced an average speed of answer of 5.6 minutes, an improvement of nearly 80 percent compared to fiscal year 2024. SSA also enhanced its automated telephone services and expanded online access through my Social Security to provide customers with more convenient ways to complete routine business. Personal my Social Security accounts enable individuals 24/7 access to the agency’s tools and services, whether they currently receive benefits or not.

To improve access in rural and remote communities, SSA deployed mobile service teams to high-need areas across Alaska. These teams provided in-person assistance and helped identify opportunities to further strengthen services throughout the state. SSA is also working with state and community partners to enhance virtual-service options and reduce barriers faced by residents who must travel long distances to obtain assistance.

In the coming weeks, Alaska will begin the process for its residents to request Social Security number (SSN) replacement cards online. Each year, 15,000 Alaskan residents need a replacement card, and they often travel long distances and incur high costs to visit a field office. Along with replacement cards, Alaskans will also be able to request name changes online. These new online replacement card and name change options will give Alaskans more ways to receive service without travel.
