Ask us to waive an overpayment

Ask us to waive repayment of a benefit amount that was more than it should have been.

If you got a letter in the mail that says you were overpaid, you generally need to pay us back. If you can't afford the repayment and feel the error wasn't your fault or is unfair, you can request a waiver to avoid having to repay an overpayment.

Other ways to complete this task

Fax or mail your request

Download Request for Waiver of Overpayment Recovery (SSA-632-BK) (PDF). Then, find your local Social Security office and fax or mail us the completed form.

Filing for bankruptcy

We cannot help you file for bankruptcy. If you have already filed, you do not need to send us a copy because the court will send it to us for you. When the court notifies us of your bankruptcy petition, we’ll generally stop collecting your overpayment(s) until the petition is resolved.
