The Supplement is the most comprehensive resource for statistics on programs administered by the Social Security Administration—the Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance program (known collectively as Social Security) and the Supplemental Security Income program. These summary statistics, derived from administrative records, primarily focus on the demographics and economics related to program beneficiaries and covered workers.
From its first edition as the 1939 Social Security Yearbook, this report has been an essential reference for policymakers, researchers, and administrators. By the time the Supplement was first released online in 1997, its content had grown to more than 250 tables alongside supporting documentation on the nation's full network of income security programs. In 2013, the Supplement became an exclusively online publication. For content generated by other federal agencies, we have gradually discontinued duplicative tables and instead directed users to their authoritative online sources, which ensures access to the most up-to-date information, particularly any errata.
In this edition, we extend that approach. In addition, for the past sections on Program Descriptions and Legislative History, we now direct users to a new, standalone Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance Program Reference for Statistical Publications, which will be independently updated, and to the Annual Report of the Supplemental Security Income Program, the authoritative resource for that program. A new Statistical Publications Glossary consolidates terms from this report and our two program-specific publications: the SSI Annual Statistical Report and the Annual Statistical Report on the Social Security Disability Insurance Program.
The Supplement continues to provide a wealth of information on program participants, supporting the agency's ability to respond to requests for program statistics from Congress, government agencies at all levels, and the research community.
